I’m Going To Disney Land!!
Danny FB’s new Norton Disney water is in my Manor.
Its only 19 mins from my front door!
So I’m going to pop down, Wednesday mid-week, for a quiet day session of
unbridled pleasure.
Gonna hit it Blind. No coaching from any of the local Guru’s.
Let’s see if we can’t catch a few of Mr Scott’s little darlings.
I do hope it’s not “Micky Mouse”.

Very Proud To Announce My Position With Lincoln DAA
I have just been made a Trustee of Lincoln DAA.
I’m looking forward to working closely with the Committee on all the new projects.
I would like to thank Andy Founds, LDAA
Secretary & Treasurer for putting his faith in me.
There are one or two waters which I fished as a kid,
that I now have access to again as part of the job.
It will be a very interesting to see if any of those old
girls that we caught at 12 Lb - 15 lb back in the day
by the older boys on the lakes have stacked the weight
on over the years.
I remember one of the Top Lincoln Wheatears boys landing an 23.5 Lb Mirror Carp way back when.
It looked huge to us kids as it lay on the bank.
Interesting and very excited to be back on some very old Lincolnshire Syndicate Waters
that I fished all those years ago and had almost forgotten about.
It’s a new day, a new challenge and Karma kicks in again.

Dissolved Oxygen and Big Carp
We all know that oxygen crashes in lakes are one reason for large fish kills and all
lakes suffer from it annually. It’s no secret that if we do not introduce a shed load
of oxygenated fresh water into Carp Lakes, the shit can and will hit the fan during
very warm summers months.
So it was wonderful to observe Tony and his team at Bluebells taking care of their
business on Swan Lake this year as the thermostats hit 35 degrees and the water
levels started to drop.
What I never gave enough thought to was the constant changes in DO (Dissolved
Oxygen) levels that in the normal course of a year will take place.
We all know that DO is produced by means of photosynthesis from algae, weed and
other aquatic plants and as aquatic photosynthesis is light-dependent, the dissolved
oxygen produced will peak during daylight hours and decline at night meaning
that the early hours of the morning will show the lowest DO readings of all.
Which may explain the Carps penchant for taking Zigs at night right under the
surface as opposed to the day time on very warm days.
Due to hydrostatic pressure you will find that if the concentration of dissolved
oxygen is at 100% air saturation at the surface, it would only be at 70% air
saturation three meters below the surface on a relatively deep lake.
What this means from a fishing perspective is that at times you will have a
situation where DO levels are high near the lakes surface but very low near the lake
bed.
I won’t bore you with the anorak science of the right and the wrong time to fish a
float under the surface for Big Carp. (Yes, I have been fishing a heavy Wagler Float
for 40 Lb Carp this year and have done the business on several lakes). It’s very Old
School.
What did strike me as strange on this day was thus. I was not fishing a session on
this day. I had popped down from Lincoln to do a recce for a later session for a
paying Student who was struggling on the water.
Swan Lake. Bluebells Fishery. Tansor. Summer 2021. (© TT)
I know Swan very well having fished Bluebells since the days of Benson & The
Creature. Remember that a day walking the water is worth its weight in gold before
a session.
So I sat and watched Jim doing a very professional job indeed. Getting the hose in
place, making sure the filter was placed nicely etc.
I expected to be trampled to death as he switched the water on, by many anglers on
the water fighting to get to the swim.
NOTHING!
So I waited another 15 minutes, nothing happened.
An hour passed, as I clicked on my EOS 40D, still nothing.
I was mystified, it was a complete mystery to me. I had half a mind to scream out
loud….”What the Fuck Is Going On; Will Someone Please Get into This
Peg and Stick a Fucking Rig into The Middle of The Bubbles” !!
It was the perfect time to flick a single bait into the mass of Fresh / Oxygen Rich /
Clean / Water. I was there for a good hour and nobody asked me to fuck off out of
the swim, so he / she could set up on it. Sadly.
Trust me on this point; If I had been fishing on the water, you would have had
tread marks across your face as I shifted round the lake with my old Nash Tracks at
full tilt to get to that swim. I would have run you over for getting in the way.
“Tip, if you ever see fresh / clean / oxygenated water going into a Carp Lake on a
warm day, from a pipe, a tributary or artificially . Stick a rig on it and leave it
alone. It’s just a matter of time before it goes”.

Are you being too agreeable to catch big Carp ?
As General Patton once said, “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.”
However despite the widely accepted recognition that group-think is lethal, and
diversity of thought is crucial, too few people are willing to push back on the
consensus opinion and too many say they agree even when they don’t fucking
agree, usually to remain a very popular member of the Carp Syndicate or Group.
Well fuck your Syndicate & your Group. Sometimes the Group is totally wrong
which is why you are blanking on a weekly basis !
The reasons are varied but usually simple.
1.
Challenging the consensus opinion is risky. After all, what if everyone
disagrees with what you have to say?
2.
What if everyone thinks you're just being difficult? What if your mates think
you’re trying to undermine him or the assumptions underlying your opinion
are ultimately proven false?
3.
Speaking up to express an opinion that isn’t held by the majority on the water
takes courage because it puts you at risk of being side-lined, criticized, rejected
or outright ejected from your seat at the table.
4.
However, as some very intelligent brains have discovered ‘Whatever your
experience as a Carp Angler. You have to be willing to take risks, to speak up
and to push back when you don’t agree with what others are thinking.’
Of course, your mates may not always agree with you, but that doesn’t mean you
aren’t adding value, winning respect and growing influence simply by showing
you have the courage to say what you really think.
Being someone others can rely on for a candid opinion, even if not always a
politically correct one, can open doors to opportunities that rarely go to those who
never share an original thought and constantly choose the safe path for fear of
ruffling a feather.
So, while no-one likes someone who is overly ‘pushy’ or continually force feeding
their opinion down the throats of others, sometimes it’s important to challenge the
status quo.
So; grow a set of bollocks & push back if you hear someone talking bullshit about a
water / a swim / a bait.
Do your own thing as often as you can.
Switch on and start thinking for yourself.
Change is a skill set.

Love it or hate it ?
I fucking love it.
An old friend of mine from Louth and one of the best Old School Carp Anglers that
UK ever produced. God Bless him swore by it. It featured in his original book.
The Carp Strikes Back; Released in the late 1980’s.
Whenever I fished with him on the Twente Canal in Holland and on the Estate
Lakes in Lincolnshire. Which we ‘Guested’ on. (Guesting = Fishing Old Estate
Lakes without permission. Try it, it’s good for the soul). He always had a jar in his
bag.
Marmite is a potent blend of some really good carp friendly ingredients which has
been around forever as a Big Carp attractor. I use a lot of it. I catch a lot of Carp.
The INGREDIENTS
Vegetable extract
Salt
Yeast extract
Spice extract
Niacin
Vitamin B12
Riboflavin
Folic acid
Thiamin
NIACIN (nicotinic acid, vitamin B3, C6H5NO2)
This is a water-soluble organic compound that helps to keep cholesterol low.
VITAMIN B12 (cobalamin, C63H88N14O14P)
This vitamin has a cobalt atom with a cyanide group attached. It helps make red
blood cells and aids brain and nervous function.
SALT (sodium chloride)
It raises the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, but it is also vital for the
nervous system. Small servings mean Marmite contributes little to daily intake.
RIBOFLAVIN (E101, vitamin B2, C17H20N4O6)
This is also an essential dietary component, abundant in nuts. It is produced
industrially by fermentation using yeast or bacteria.
YEAST EXTRACT (E620, C5H9NO4)
Marmite's defining ingredient is made from brewer's yeast heated to create
glutamic acid.
FOLIC ACID (folate, vitamin B9, C19H19N7O6)
Used in many body processes including the creation and repair of DNA, It's added
to bread and cereals.
VEGETABLE EXTRACT
This is chiefly made from peanuts and soya. The process uses hydrochloric acid,
followed by neutralising, filtering, decolourising and concentrating.
SPICE EXTRACT (contains celery)
The composition of this is unspecified. But when it emerged that some people are
allergic to celery, the EU demanded that it be listed as an ingredient.
THIAMIN (vitamin B1, thiamine hydrochloride, C12H17ClN4OS)
This is an essential nutrient.
So looking at the ingredients it does not take the brains of an Arch Bishop to work
out why Carp love it.
Give it a try in your bait. In your Pop Ups. In your Spod Mix or spoon it into a
Margin Swim neat. Carp Love the stuff. (And If all else fails. Whip out your
‘Ridge Monkey Toaster’ and the thick sliced white, bit of Marmite & butter. Get a
brew on. Happy Days, Mi duck).
It’s a Win – Win !

Especially Tiger Nuts.
Tiger Milk and everything in-between.
Neat, Peanut Butter & punched Snickers Bar on the hair, is my go-to Margin
Fishing secret. (Shhhhh. Don’t tell anyone).
I am certainly not apologising for using Nuts.
Research suggests that eating nuts may:
•
Lower your low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad") cholesterol and
triglyceride levels, which play a major role in the build-up of deposits called
plaques in your arteries
•
Improve the health of the lining of your arteries
•
Lower levels of inflammation linked to heart disease
•
Reduce the risk of developing blood clots, which can lead to a heart attack
and death
As a result, nuts can improve your heart health and lower your risk of dying early
from heart disease and other causes.
What might make nuts heart healthy for Carp?
Besides being packed with protein, most nuts contain at least some of these heart-
healthy substances:
•
Unsaturated fats. It's not entirely clear why, but it's thought that the "good"
fats in nuts — both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — lower bad
cholesterol levels.
•
Omega-3 fatty acids. It's well known that omega-3 fatty acids are found in
fish, but many nuts also are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are healthy
fatty acids that seem to help your heart by, among other things, preventing
irregular heart rhythms that can lead to heart attacks.
•
Fibre. All nuts contain fibre, which helps lower your cholesterol. Fibre also
makes you feel full, so you eat less. In addition, fibre is thought to play a role in
preventing type 2 diabetes.
•
Vitamin E. Vitamin E may help stop the development of plaques in your
arteries, which can narrow them. Plaque development in your arteries can lead
to chest pain, coronary artery disease or a heart attack.
•
Plant sterols. Some nuts contain plant sterols, a substance that can help lower
your cholesterol. Plant sterols are often added to products such as margarine
and orange juice for additional health benefits, but sterols occur naturally in
nuts.
•
L-arginine. Nuts are also a source of L-arginine, which is a substance that may
help improve the health of your artery walls by making them more flexible and
less prone to blood clots that can block blood flow.
Let me put this ridiculous myth to bed once and for all
because its total Bollocks !
A large King Carp will suck a fucking golf ball through a garden hose with
consummate ease. It will then pass it back out without missing a fucking stroke.
End of discussion.
What stomach, you Muppet?
“The common carp has no stomach; therefore the ingested food arriving from the
mouth passes directly into the intestine. The overall intestinal length relative to the
total body length is related to the feeding habits of the fish species under
consideration”.
So could we all stop banging on about it.
Prepare your Nuts properly and they are as safe as any Boilie. In-fact there is an
argument to be made that Nuts are far safer.
1.
They are natural.
2.
They contain no chemical signature.
3.
No e colours.
4.
No chemical dyes.
5.
No artificial stimulants.
6.
Nasty chemicals flavours.
7.
The list is endless.
8.
Crude proteins.
Let me remind you of something.
Fishing Bait is NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUPTION.
Which means that you can fill Carp Bait full of any none toxic, nasty Shit and get
away with it.” @ £13 a Kilo. FFS !!!
Carp anatomy
1 - Gills
Gills of fish are for breathing. The gills sit behind the gill cover and, in a healthy
fish, appear a bright red colour. The gills are extremely efficient at extracting
oxygen from water allowing the fish to function normally. They can extract over
80% of the oxygen in the water passing over them (average person is around 4%).
This efficiency comes at a price however. To get the oxygen in, the tissue is very
thin, typically just seven thousandths of a millimetre.
This makes them very fragile, so the gill cover protects them from damage. Rough
handling can easily damage them, so anglers should try and avoid touching or
handling a fish around the gills. The oxygen the fish extracts is used to ‘burn’ the
food it has digested to provide the energy to survive.
2 - Swim bladder
This organ stores gas inside the fish. Its main function is to counterbalance the
weight of the rest of the fish’s body. This means the fish doesn’t have to swim to
stay in the water column. It effectively makes the fish neutrally buoyant. This
means the fins can be used to control position with slow precise movement rather
than constantly having to work to keep itself off the bottom.
3 - Weberian Ossicles
These are found only in the carp-like fish. They are bone extensions of the spine and
connect the swim bladder to the fish’s ears. This connection means that the fish can
hear a much wider range of sound frequencies. Fish like perch and pike don’t have
these and so have less effective hearing.
4 - Ears
The ears of fish are internal with no connection to the outside world. The reason for
this is simply that they don’t need to. Sound travels much better in water compared
to air, so the sound easily passes into the fish where their ears can detect it. Fish
hear much lower pitch sounds than people but are not as good at hearing high
pitched sounds. You should remember this when you’re trampling about on the
bank or banging in bank sticks!
5 - Heart
This is a blood pump, just like in people. In fish, blood leaves the heart and goes
directly to the gills. So when the blood arrives at the gills it is at high pressure and
flowing fast. This helps to make the gills efficient in carrying oxygen and food, as
well as transporting waste chemicals. The blood then travels away from the gills
carrying oxygen to other body organs. However, it also means that if the gills are
damaged the blood loss is quite rapid – so avoid handling fish near the gills. The
heart sits under the gills usually in the V-shape formed between the two gill covers.
This location ensures the heart doesn’t have to pump blood far to get to the gills.
6 - Brain
Fish brains are not massive but perfectly functional for what the fish needs. They
are particularly well developed for processing sensory information such as vision,
smell and sounds.
7 - Liver
The liver of most of our coarse fish is usually quite big and combines the liver and
pancreas together. This organ regulates and processes the digested food. It can also
break down harmful chemicals. In coarse fish it is usually connected closely with
the intestine. If it gets damaged it means the fish can’t process food properly and
they can waste away and die. In coarse fish fed on trout pellets it can also get quite
fatty. As yet however, there is no real evidence that this does the fish any harm.
8 - Stomach and Intestine
Predatory fish have stomachs to process the ingested prey. Fish like carp and roach
don’t have a true stomach and just have a long intestine. This is because they feed
more frequently than predators and their natural food often comes in smaller bits.
This means they don’t need a stomach to start the digestion process. Food travels
down the gut and is soaked with digestive chemicals to break it down. It’s then
absorbed by the intestine and transported by blood to the liver or is stored for later
use.
9 - Kidney
A fish’s two kidneys are merged into one and sit right under the spine. The kidney’s
main function is to act as a filter and is well developed in all freshwater fish. It
basically filters the blood and allows the fish to get rid of all the water that leaks
into its body across the gills and through the intestine. The rest of the outside skin
of the fish is generally pretty watertight unless it gets damaged. If the kidney gets
damaged by disease or pollution, the fish retains water and will bloat up because it
can’t effectively get rid of the water.
10 - Spleen
A dark red organ usually located around the middle of the fish. This organ makes
and stores blood and also helps to fight off infections.
11 - Gall Bladder
Produces bile which is secreted into the intestine to neutralise acid from the
stomach and also helps digest fats in food. It is usually bright yellow or green
depending on the colour of the bile it produces.
The Carp is an Omnivore. It will feed on anything which you present to it, if it is
viewed by The King Carp as a food source.
However they adore NUTS !
End of debate ! Accept it. No cognitive dissonance. Your fucking wrong !

Lovely Lincolnshire is known for its long wide sandy beaches, popular seaside

Learn to Chill Out before starting your Carp session
You may need to slow down
and chill out before you start
your session, and stay away
from the Beer, it does not
help. Trust me I like a drink
or 6 down my local pub or a
post fishing session with
mates. But I never mix my
Carp fishing with alcohol.
Personally its disastrous for
my decision-making ability.
Stress
Thanks to the work of our
sympathetic nervous system,
the "fight or flight" system
that takes over when we're
stressed. , when you see your
chance to escape your
normal life for a weekend,
your body reacts like there's a lion on the loose.
Behind the wide range of both physical and mental reactions to stress are a number
of hormones that are in charge of adding fuel to the fire. Add Alcohol and it may
not end well for you.
Adrenaline is the worst in humble opinion: Adrenaline is not something which
you want to have pumping through your system if you are trying to relax into
your weekend Carp Session.
What It Is: Commonly known as the fight or flight hormone, it is produced by the
adrenal glands after receiving a message from the brain that a stressful situation
has presented itself.
What It Does: Adrenaline, along with norepinephrine is largely responsible for
the immediate reactions we feel when stressed.
Imagine you're trying to get down to the lake before the gates close. You set off late,
your misses / partner gave you a bit of grief before setting off or the boss made you
work late.
You have your boot down. You are trying to move into the fast lane on the A1
southbound. Suddenly, from
your blind spot, comes a car
also doing 100 miles per
hour and misses you by 6
inches.
You return to your original
lane after beeping your horn
for 30 seconds, giving him
the wanker sign, calling him
a prick at the top of your
voice.
You start calm down a bit,
but now you notice that
your heart is pounding like a
knackered clock. Your
muscles are tense, you're
breathing faster, you are
sweating, head pounding.
That's adrenaline my mate.
Along with the increase in heart rate, adrenaline also gives you a surge of energy –
because you might need to run away from a dangerous situation – or fight and it
also focuses your attention.
Bring this state of mind to the lake, and things are not going to go well, the
slightest thing will set you off, and the session will go sideways more often than
not.
Take a deep breath. Hold it for a moment, and then exhale. Feel more relaxed?
Breathing exercises are one way to relax. Being relaxed can help ease stress. It can
also relieve anxiety, depression, and sleep problems.
So being relaxed when you get to the lake is the best mindset to be in before you
start your next Carp Session.
Chill out, go with the flow.
